As usual, picking winners was made difficult by the many impressive products announced during the year. Here is a product by Cardinal Components chosen as a 2002 award winner.

Programmable oscillators flex their reconfigurability

The engineering need for oscillators to be more flexible continues to grow. With many applications—such as CATV, adaptable networks, wireless hubs, and cellular base stations— using multiple oscillators on one board, engineers are increasingly requiring the flexibility to change frequencies in-circuit on the fly. The MIPO multifrequency in-circuit reconfigurable programmable oscillators were introduced this past September (see Electronic Products, Sept. 2002, p. 74) as the first of their kind to address this need. The parts can be reconfigured in-circuit an infinite number of times using the I2C interface—a feature never before available in a quartz timing product. In addition, the oscillators consume less than 50% of the power of traditional devices, while reducing board space by 30% and component count from six to one. Operating from a 3.3-V supply, the family has a frequency range from 200-kHz to 200-MHz CMOS and 100 to 400-MHz PECL.

Based on the company's field instantly programmable oscillator (FIPO), the CPPD series dual FIPO is presented at the first such devise to offer a frequency-select function that can satisfy two different frequencies on one board with one output. This change of frequency is done within seconds requiring no external components, thus saving engineering time, coast, and board space.

In addition, the oscillator is claimed to provide the fastest start-up time - 10ms - and the lowest jitter - 8 ps typ - for a programmable part, equivalent to standard fixed-frequency parts. The device can be programmed to fit frequencies from 1.000 to 133.000 Mhz.

Operating voltage is 2.7, 3.3 and 5.0 V, and available temperature ranges are 0 to 70, -20 to 70, and -40 to 85C. Features include CMOS/TTL output and frequency stabilities of 25, 50, and 100 ppm.

The Pg-3000 field oscillator instrument is used to program the device. Oscillator blanks are available in full-size 14-pin DIP, half-size 8-pin DIP, 5 x 7 ceramic SMD, and plastic SMD.

Instantly programmable oscillators eliminate specification hassles

Introduced last year, the CPP Series field instantly programmable oscillators (FIPO) offered to significantly reduce the design cycle by allowing manufacturers to produce, instantly, their own sealed, custom oscillators in house or in the field. Ideal for use in prototypes, early stage design, and unexpected design problems, the CPP Series allows designers to program an oscillator to the specification they require in seconds - a dramatic time savings compared to the weeks or months it could previously take to create a custom oscillator.

The FIPOs are based on CPP Series oscillator blanks, which can be programmed - with no programming skills necessary - within seconds with the PG-2000P standalone field oscillator programmer or the PG-2000 PC-based programmer. The FIPO oscillators can be reprogrammed to correct errors or to reuse the same part for two separate applications with different frequency and/or output characteristics.

The oscillators offer frequencies from 1.0 to 133.0 MHz with 6 digits of accuracy. Operating voltage is 3, 3.3, and 5V, and temperature range is 0 to 70 C and -40 to 85 C. Features include a frequency stability of 35 and 75 ppm, CMOS/TTL output, a tristate enable/disable, and output control (sync and async).

The series PG-2000P standalone programmer is used to programm 4-pin oscillators in the field. The self- contained portable unit, which does not require an additional PC or frequency counter, includes an internal TCXO frequency reference.

Oscillators blanks are available in full-size 14-pin DIPs, half-size 8-pin DIPs, 5 x 7 ceramic SMD and plastic SMD packages.
